Differences between the Confidential and Public Marriage Licenses:
PUBLIC Marriage License:
- In this instance, the document is public, and everyone can ask for a copy.
- The signature of a witness over the age of 18 years old is requested.
- The license is valid for 90 days from the expiration date and can only be used in marriage ceremonies in California on that period of time. If this timeframe is exceeded it is needed to re-apply and pay for a new license as there are no reimbursements.
- It can be acquired in any Californian county and the ceremony can take place anywhere in California.
CONFIDENTIAL Marriage Licenses:
- In the confidential license type, only the registered couple may get a copy of the document, except in under some circumstances.
- There are no witnesses needed.
- The marriage ceremony should take place in the county where the license was issued.
- The couple must ensure they live together when they apply.
- Same as in the public type, this license is valid for 90 days only.
